What is changing in rail travel

Although Germany is going into lockdown on December 16, Deutsche Bahn is sticking to their new schedule. The said they will fulfill their responsibility to offer as many seats as possible to allow for social distancing on trains. So despite the lockdown, they will be running as announced. The current cancellation policies will remain in place.

Comfort & higher train frequency: Deutsche Bahn is planning changes for the Christmas period to improve travel comfort during times of coronavirus. Changes will be regarding distancing, hygiene, and seats to adhere to the coronavirus restrictions in the different states. Therefore, less people will be on the train, but there will be more trains running. Mid-December at the latest, thousands of additional seats will created. For the Hamburg-Berlin route, trains will run every half hour instead of every hour. According to Deutsche Bahn, the overall schedule will be increased by 10%.

Face masks: It is still mandatory to wear face masks on trains and at train stations. Employees of Deutsche Bahn will conduct checks.

On-board restaurants: Eating is still not possible in the on-board restaurants. The seats are available for travelers without a seat reservation.

Capacity now visible: The Deutsche Bahn’s occupancy display shows travelers how full a train will be. An orange icon shows you when more than half of the seats are expected to be occupied, says Deutsche Bahn.

Price changes Deutsche Bahn: Those traveling by train around Christmas time should know about the price change on December 13 that came together with the new winter train schedule. The prices for long-distance trips increased by 1% on average. Flexible fares are also affected; they increased by 1.5% on average. Season tickets and the BahnCard 100 will increase by 1.9%.

What is changing for Comtravo customers for seat reservations

Seat reservations: With the changing schedule on December 13, Deutsche Bahn has also made changes to the seat change options. It is no longer possible to change your booked seat free of charge. In order to avoid additional costs, we at Comtravo have adjusted our processes for you:

  • For group bookings as of mid-December: If you’re booking train tickets with us by email or phone, you’ll receive the ticket first and then afterward another email with the booked seat to ensure that groups can sit together. This is not possible for bookings on the online booking tool.
  • If you’re booking train tickets for several travelers, you can book seats on the online booking tool, however, we can’t guarantee that groups will be able to sit together.
  • Therefore, we’d like to ask you to use the email channel when booking train tickets for multiple travelers. That way we can make sure that those travelers will be able to sit together.
